When kidney function declines to the point where dialysis becomes necessary, patients have two main options: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Each has its advantages and considerations.
Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis filters your blood through a machine (dialyzer) outside your body. It is typically performed at a dialysis center three times per week, with each session lasting about four hours.
Peritoneal Dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your abdomen (peritoneum) as a natural filter. It can be done at home, giving patients more flexibility and independence.
